An opportunity to work with artistic director Filip Van Huffel where participants can learn new skills, meet like-minded people and be inspired in the challenging Retina style.
Each day will begin with a technique class that is full bodied and fun. This will be followed by learning material for skill building, improvisation, partner work and movement creation from choreographic tasks. The 3 days will focus on process so that the participants will get the maximum benefit from the material, but the movement will be structured into a form so that there can be a performance on the Wednesday evening for friends and family.
"The session will be Fast, fun and challenging, taught by our Artistic Director Filip Van Huffel and Retina company dancers."
Matthew Robinson recently introduced us to a new short film he's been working on. He described it as an exploration of 'our obsession with the body as a subject to be photographed, examined and obscured beyond its reality. How far can distortions of the body go before they actually reveal the humanity and fragility beneath the facades of beauty and sexuality?' The music is by Goldmund. Here it is!
“Tennis is more than just a sport. It's an art, like the ballet. Or like a performance in the theater. When I step on the court I feel like Anna Pavlova. Or like Adelina Patti. Or even like Sarah Bernhardt. I see the footlights in front of me. I hear the whisperings of the audience. I feel an icy shudder. Win or die! Now or never! It's the crisis of my life.” – Bill Tilden
The Journey of Discovery
Inspired by the ‘Alice books’ this piece explores the excitement and distress of being in a new place and situation.

Cloud Dance Festival 'Firefly' put on by Chantal Guevara is running from Friday to Sunday at the Pleasance Theatre in Islington. We like to refer to this festival as the 'underground' of contemporary dance. Chantal is extremely active in the promotion of dance and without funding has took it upon herself to arrange a platform whereby new and upcoming dancers and dance companies can showcase their work. Firefly looks like it's going to be the best line up yet - Tommy Franzen will be there for all you SYTYCD fans performing Royal Ballet soloist Kristen McNally's "indie ballet" (for all you ballet fans!). Tavaziva and Shobana Jeyasingh dancer Devaraj Thimmaiah will be showing his new work 'Arranged Marriage'. James Cousins from Matthew Bourne's New Adventures is performing and James Finnemore from Hofesh Shechter Company will also be there doing a solo. Lots of companies to check out - there really is something for everyone. To find out more about the line up and how to purchase tickets see www.cloud-dance-festival.org.uk

Following the success of last year's event 'Under Construction' the dancers of Scottish Dance Theatre will once again be sharing their own brand new works at 'Under Construction II' on July 27th and September 21st at Dundee Rep.
We asked SDT dancer Matthew Robinson to describe what it's all about!
"Under Construction is now becoming an annual event in Scottish Dance Theatres calendar. An exciting opportunity for the dancers within the company to create work of their own, exploring their creative voices. This year we bring our own work to our home stage at Dundee Rep, with full technical support. It should be a great evening of new short works, created entirely in-house.
Toby and I will be presenting our new work, which finally at this late stage we have named '(why wait for what, for wait for when)', although this is still of course subject to change.
The work features the music of Tom Waits, The Killers and Lynyrd Skynyrd and is set in a dusty trailer park in the shadows of the American dream. It follows two men waiting, for what is unclear, and is a surreal delve into what can possess us when the mind is unoccupied.
Our process this time has taken us both into new ways of creating work, working with less formal structure and allowing the work to almost form itself. It is a theatrical experience featuring a lighting set up especially created for the work and a varied sound score, some of which I'm sure will have people singing along in their heads."
Matthew also updated us on a new short film he's working on-
"My new short film (as yet untitled), explores our obsession with the body as a subject to be photographed, examined and obscured beyond its reality. How far can distortions of the body go before they actually reveal the humanity and fragility beneath the facades of beauty and sexuality? It features the beautiful music of Goldmund, which I first encountered while working with Kate Weare in creation last year, It has a cold, stark humanity to it.
We hope to see both new and familiar faces when we perform on July 27th."
For the first time ever, Cloud Dance Festival is holding a photography exhibition during their upcoming festival to showcase the works of the talented dance photographers who regularly work with them.

The company will be performing a triple bill of their most current work, including the premier of their new work 'FAWN'. Set to the compelling music of Mozart’s Requiem, this series of pas de deux’s show’s off the companies’ classical and contemporary versatility, technique and physicality and pushes the dancers beyond their limits.
Between Three, show’s three very diverse works from the company repertoire, two of which have been shown throughout the UK and Scotland over the last 18 months, most recently at Covent Garden, Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Arts and Exeter. The pieces represent a cross section of the company’s style, strength and adaptability.
Between Three comprise of Slowly We Collide, a classically influenced piece choreographed to the beautiful music of Joby Talbot. Recently premiered in Covent Garden to rapturous reviews, the piece explores the natural relationships between the dancers as they interweave with each other in a series of duets, trios and quartets. Graham Watts, dance critic for London Dance.com, called it ‘the most arresting and complete new work of the evening’.
Alongside this will be ‘Ternion’, a piece first shown in Liverpool 2010. Receiving consistently favorable reviews by various critics over the last 12 months, Ternion has been described as a ‘slick and physically impressive (Debbie Shine 2010)’ piece to watch. Choreographed to the music of Chris Clark, this piece has been described as ‘Cunninghamesque’ in its movement, with arched backs, long extensions and elongated limbs.
Finally we present ‘FAWN”. Inspired by the arresting music of Mozart, this piece represents a new beginning for Antique Dances and will complete a night of beautifully crafted choreography and visually stunning dance.
Tickets can be bought via kingsheadtheatre.ticketsolve.com or via the box office on 020 7478 0160. Tickets priced at £15-£22.50
