Scottish Dance Theatre needs your help!

Scottish Dance Theatre (SDT) is teaming up with Ardler, Menzieshill and Charleston Community Centres to introduce the Dundee Rep based contemporary dance company and reminisce with local people about dancing in Dundee throughout the years.

Currently celebrating it’s 25th year, SDT is embarking on research for a project which will celebrate dance in all its forms, in Dundee past and present.

Each community centre session is free and will consist of an introduction to SDT by Artistic Director Janet Smith, performances of short works from the company’s repertoire and the chance to sit down with Janet and the dancers over a cuppa to share your stories of dancing in Dundee.

SDT are collecting stories, pictures and films about dancing in Dundee and will host a city wide, cross generational, celebration of dance in 2012/13 where you will be able to learn dances from throughout the years; from hip hop to lindy hop, ballroom to breakdance; watch local groups perform and hear dance stories from the people of Dundee.

So, if you have great memories of dance in Dundee from the old Dundee dance halls to learning Scottish country dancing at school or learning hip hop moves from a local group we’d love to hear about your experiences and what dance means to you. Join us at your local community centre or get in touch with us directly on 01382 342600 for a chat or to arrange to meet someone from SDT in person, or email sdt@dundeereptheatre.co.uk.

UK Hip Hop Dance Championships...the competition heats up!

The iDance® UK Hip Hop Dance Championships kicks off this weekend with the first of its regional qualifiers, in the Midlands and the South. Over the coming weeks, dancers from all over the country will begin their battle to claim the title of UK Champions.

On Saturday, Southerners will be out in force at Bournemouth Pavillion dance centre for the competition itself as well as an open jam in the sunshine and workshops and showcases from judges including Turbo from Sky TV’s Got To Dance. Meanwhile, Midlanders will head to Birmingham’s premier arts centre, The Drum where, as well as breathtaking performances from the dancers, there’s a chance to win tickets to see legendary hip hop group, Slum Village.

The grand final takes place over 4th and 5th June at the nation’s thrill capital, Thorpe Park, where winners from the regional events will compete against each other for the grand prize, the right to represent their country at the World Hip Hop Dance Championships in August 2011. This year, the judging panel for the UK finals includes legendary dancer, Shabba Doo, star of Breakin’ and choreographer to Madonna.

The iDance® UK Hip Hop Dance Championships is run by dancers for dancers and is the only event that qualifies British Hip Hop Crews, Breakers, Poppers and Lockers for the World Hip Hop Dance Championships in America, produced by Hip Hop International, creators of ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’, on MTV. Members of the top UK crew will have their flights paid to go Las Vegas this summer to represent the UK, so the competition is heating up!

Previous winners of iDance have included Plague who went on to win the world championships in America; Flawless, who went on to become finalists on Britain’s Got Talent competition in 2009; Peridot (BBC's Move Like Michael Jackson, Britain's Got Talent); Jukebox and DNA (featured dance groups on Sky 1’s Got to Dance). Omar Paloma, founder of iDance said: “For the past two years, iDance has seen some of the best hip hop and street dance crews from across the UK compete for a lucrative spot at the World Hip Hop Championships. The competition is only going to get tougher as we see the boundaries of this dance genre being pushed to their limits and beyond. The UK has some exceptional dance talent and we’re looking forward to sending the winners to represent us and show the world of street dance exactly what the UK is made of. ”

Vocab Dance Company 'Episodes of Blackness' Only date in London!

Episodes of Blackness is a powerful evening of dynamic interdisciplinary work inspired by aspects of black culture and heritage.

Using dance theatre, music and spoken word, the mixed bill premieres brand new work ‘Word!’, a choreographic response to headlines around youth culture; 'Temps Mort', a quintet which embodies a fierce combination fused for a powerful exploration focused on polygamy, sensitively drawing upon this subject without placing any judgment and allowing the audience to engage with this issue from multiple angles; and a revival of the highly acclaimed 'Kwenda - Kwenda', a compelling exploration of female's wishing to step away from ones roots yet worried about its effects.

Choreographer Alesandra Seutin's combines traditional African dance with Contemporary and Hip Hop dynamics resulting in a distinctly fast paced, athletic evening of Afro-Eclectic Contemporary Dance.

"Seutin’s own spin on the fusing of African, Contemporary, Hip Hop and Physical Theatre, results in a rich eclectic, yet modern, movement language that truly reflects the company’s style”. Catch a Vibe
"Vocab Dance Company is impressive". The Guardian

David Hughs Dance THE RED ROOM GOES ON TOUR

DAVID HUGHES DANCE BRING THEIR HIGHLY SKILLED, VISUALLY EXCITING AND SINISTER PRODUCTION OF THE RED ROOM TO DUNDEE REP.

If you didn’t manage to beg, buy or steal a ticket for the sell-out run at the Traverse Theatre for the 2009 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, you’ll be pleased to hear that David Hughes Dance’s award-winning and critically acclaimed production of THE RED ROOM is coming to Dundee Rep Theatre on 21 April, 8pm as part of their 2011 Spring tour.

“Dripping decadence and cruelty, it seduces and manipulates its audience expertly… Nasty in the nicest possible way.” The Guardian

The collaboration between one of the UK’s finest contemporary dancers David Hughes (choreographer) and award-winning theatre maker Al Seed (director) is an energetic, contemporary theatrical interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe’s 19th century classic tale, The Masque of the Red Death; a decadent, Bacchanalian piece of dance-theatre.

"A well-groomed production that resonates with wit intelligence and the kind of cross genre integration that so much dance theatre fails to achieve." The Herald

Capturing the underlying themes of mortality, hedonism, madness and the end of the world the diverse company of performers weave a multitude of dance traditions - ballet, break dancing, contemporary dance, Bharatanatyam - with high-octane physical theatre to create a truly macabre horror show for the stage.

“It’s a wonderfully rude affair with plenty of humping, jesting, grotesquerie, and some gorgeous courtly-meets-contemporary dance.” Scotland on Sunday

In Poe’s short story, Prince Prospero, having locked himself away in his castle, throws a series of enormous parties to entertain a thousand hedonistic guests. Outside the fortified walls, his kingdom is being rapidly destroyed by a virulent disease known as the red death. The party-goers feign indifference, sinking into ever baser behaviours in their attempt to ignore the hellishness of the world outside and the doom-laden tolling of Prospero’s clock.

Pestilence, decadence, grotesquery… Barricaded in his opulent abbey-mansion a prince entertains a party of debauched revellers whilst the world outside teeters on the brink of plague-ridden apocalypse. But, as long as the wine flows and the musicians play what reason have they to care?...

This touring production was made possible as a result of a two-year flexible funding award from Creative Scotland and DavidHughesDance’s appointment as Associate Company to the Traverse Theatre. The company received a Herald award and a Total Theatre Special Commendation for the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe production.

C-12 Dance Theatre Looking Forward 2011

Adam Towndrow, Creative Director, has been appointed as an Ambassador to Luton’s Hat Factory Arts Centre, providing inspirational motivational talks, encouraging communities to get involved in the arts, in the Bedfordshire area.
C-12's open dance classes started in March 2011 at Chisenhale Dance Space continuing to provide high quality dance theatre classes every Friday 7:30pm-9pm. This is open to the community, professional and student dancers. Each class is taken by a choreographer of C-12 Dance Theatre, so it is a unique opportunity to get involved within the company, have fun and keep fit.

See Link for more info on C-12 dance classes.

April 28th in Shrewsbury at Theatre Severn will be the final tour date of C-12’s first National Tour of “The Chair”, having wowed audiences up and down the UK.  This 5 star production is the foundation of the company’s progressive and ambitious nature. The tour has opened up many doors and opportunities, not to mention fantastic relationships with venues and schools alike.

Live Vibe performance, July 2011 will mark the first choreography of C-12 Dance Theatre for a very long time. This is one not to miss. This will be at Sadler’s Wells, Lilian Baylis studio, London.
In June and July, C-12 will be working with 2 primary schools in St Albans, Hertfordshire on 2 exciting new pieces of site specific dance theatre.  The performances will take place on the Adidas sponsored “Adizone” area in the St Albans park. It is full of specialist outdoor equipment designed to encourage the community to be fit and active in the park. The choreography is inspired by the Olympics, bridging the gap between old school games and the modern games/equipment.  C-12 will spend 4 weeks working with around 40 local pupils. The performance is FREE and will be at 4pm July 8th.
In May through to July, C-12 will be creating a new theatrical choreography for the Bridge Academy, Hackney B-Tech students for their final performance exam.  The choreography will take place twice a week for 12 weeks.

Over 5 weeks in May and June, C-12 will be choreographing on a boys group at the Francis Bacon School in Hatfield.  The piece will be completed by the dance staff at the school for an additional 5 weeks.  The piece will be performed at the school and will feature at the Dance Digital showcase at the Watford Palace Festival in July.

C-12 in partnership with Chancellors School, Herfordshire will continue to work weekly at the school, providing a foundation in ballet/contemporary dance for year 7+8's.  While the older group, E-Motion, will be taught engaging high quality dance theatre. Performances of this work were performed in March 2011 at the County Dance Festival in St Albans.
Over 10 weeks from May, C-12 will be creating a choreography specially commissioned by Youth Dance England.  The project is designed to look at childhood obesity, and the effects dance can have.  The project is called “Go Dance” and will be performed at the Dance Digital showcase July 6th at the Watford Palace Theatre. There may also be a second performance at Dance East, Ipswich.
Enfield Classes - Since first contact with the Council in August 2010, after seeing C-12 perform at the Arcola, London with “The Chair", C-12 began to provide high quality dance, within the Borough the company trained in, for the community.  This continues to this day, working every week and includin holiday periods, C-12 is providing high quality affordable classes.
North Kesteven School, Lincoln - Having seen “The Chair” in Lincoln in 2011, the school has asked C-12 to come back and provide a masterclass for the day in May.
Skinners’ Academy, Hackney - Earlier in 2011, C-12 working with Hackney Council, created a piece of dance theatre over a number of weeks, which was performed at the Hackney Empire, London for 'Discover Young Hackney'.
“C-12 Dance Theatre has had a remarkable start to the year, performing “The Chair” up and down the country.  Our focus primarily has been to increase our local and national profile, through engaging with local community opportunity within London and Hertfordshire, while embracing the National tour opportunities by connecting with regional schools/arts organisations. Summer 2011 and beyond, we look to strengthen our repertoire by working on a number of new exciting pieces, composers and technologies,  build on existing and new relationships locally and nationally, and to continue to work solidly within boroughs and communities which we hope to encourage all those to be a part of and enjoy dance. Dance Ground has it’s part to play within all of this too. Their support to the cause is constant and I would like to thank them for everything that they do, bringing dance and dancers together. “  Adam Towndrow, C-12 Dance Theatre

Power through Independence- Why companies like Rosie Kay's can lead a new wave of quality dance

When a company as cutting edge as Rosie Kay's gets refused Arts Council NPO status the value of private investment and philanthropic support becomes all the more significant.

Despite filling the ideological criteria for state funding of producing something of cultural value, being freed from the shackles of state dependence, companies like Rosie Kay's can find a new found financial & creative freedom. Naturally a withdrawal from state funding can bring about pain, but its long term benefits can produce a stronger and more powerful voice.

RKDC is one of the best dance companies the UK has. If it so wishes, it's in a prime position to lead a movement of more independently funded quality companies.

The company has been around since 2004. During this time Rosie Kay has created high quality expressive and purposeful dance alongside a strong company ethos to support professional artists, schools and colleges.

Her latest and most notable work
'5 Soldiers - The Body is the Frontline' explores war in modern times, the intense personal experiences of the individuals involved and how the human body remains essential to war. As a dancer this vitalness was already paramount to Rosie, but in order to get a better understanding of soldiers she joined 4th Battalion, The Rifles for several weeks and spent time at Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court and Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham. Collaborator David Cotterrell spent time in Helmand Province with the Joint Forces Medical Group in 2007 witnessing operations on combat trauma victims in the field hospital at Camp Bastion. The dancers also went through vigorous physical training to understand their roles.

Radio4 interview with Rosie Kay '
A Body at War'

The Company spent a week filming in an aircraft hanger in Coventry to create
a 13-angle edit interactive film version of 5 Soldiers to give watchers more of an interactive experience of dance. Following from the success of the UK tour, Rosie Kay decided to create a film work that would appeal to a wide audience.

“What I love about this version is that you really get to know each performer- by following each of the soldiers you see their unique journey and by going inside their head to see from their viewpoint, you almost get to feel how they feel! A fellow soldier can give you a grin, a look or even a big push, yet as soon as you step away, you see how small and insignificant they are in this big landscape. I felt it had parallels to us all and to the soldier’s experience - how intensely everything is felt close up, but ultimately how small you are in the big picture of a war.”  Rosie Kay
Website:  www.5soldiers.co.uk

D
espite news media interest, there is still very little recent art or theatre work that tells the individual story behind the headlines.

"I rate Rosie Kay as one of the brightest and most enterprising young choreographers currently at work in the UK. Her choreography is definitely rooted in the body, but it also conveys a sharp, sound sense of the theatrical along with a conceptual savvy.” Donald Hutera, freelance writer for The Times
“… Astonishing work… Rosie Kay’s dancers get right inside the skins, the minds, the very souls of the five as they progress from the rigours of training to the breath-holding intensity of the frontline. It’s highly charged and it screams authenticity.. …. Awesome.” The Stage
"I spent 30 years in the Army, much of that in Green Jacket battalions on operational tours around the world including Borneo and Northern Ireland.  I enjoyed the piece enormously and found much of it very moving. It took me back to my days as a platoon and company commander and I was reminded of the sheer physicality of soldiering: the endless pursuit of fitness and the importance of keeping bodies healthy."
"I am a former Green Jacket soldier so found it very easy to follow what was going on.  I found the performance deeply moving, relevant and so representative of how soldiers are and how they cope with the contrasting aspects of their lives... But through it shines the in extinguishable light of the British soldier's guts, determination and irrepressible sense of humour.  Thank you all."
Rosie Kay Dance Company is also working on new 'Dancing For The Games' project 'The Great Train Race' which will take place in July on the Severn Valley Railway. This event is a combined effort between RKDC, The Centre for Advanced Training West Midlands, Making Choreographers, 12 professional dance leaders and 500 participants. This project is funded by independent charity - Legacy Trust UK to create a cultural and sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games across the UK.
