East London Dance Geared Up For Dance Currents 2011

East London Dance is shining a light onto the thriving dance scene by serving up Dance Currents 2011. This inspirational and enlightening season presents a wide range of illuminating one-off concept nights by local, national and international dance companies and underground artists and has been described by audiences as ‘hugely entertaining’.

East London Dance has been producing the Dance Currents season for the past five years and have seen it go from strength to strength - presenting high quality dance to an ever growing audience. The season presents emerging talent alongside seasoned professionals, some of who have now gone on to be incredibly successful. Frederick Opoku Addaie first programmed in 2006 is now an Associate Artist at ROH2; Boy Blue Entertainment, now Associate Artists for the Barbican; and James Wilton who has more recently won Sadler’s Wells Global Dance Contest. With some of the most cutting edge choreography, dynamic performances and inspiring collaborations, the Dance Currents 2011 season is the secret to lighting up your life with the perfect night of dance, atmosphere and entertainment.

The season kicks off with Blueprint – a showcase celebrating talented young upcomingchoreographers with the freshest moves, the latest trends and a range of styles. The event will premiere a brand new work by Blueprint Bursary winner 2011 Joseph Toonga co commissioned by East London Dance, London Youth Dance and Sadler's Wells. It is the only London based bursary in which three heavy weight London organisations come together to share the mission to support the best young dance makers. Fresh, fun and ambitious, come watch the cream of the crop from the emerging British dance scene.

Illegal Dance - London’s leading Hip Hop Company Avant Garde Dance are collaborating with digital artist Nic Sandiland and Edinburgh Fringe First winner Inua Ellams to create a fully immersive and interactive multimedia production. Illegal Dance reveals an underground society where dance and artistic expression are suppressed, forbidden and illegal. Breaking convention and showing a distinctive and innovative style, an interactive realm will be created where the spectator becomes part of the spectacle and where the real and the surreal are blurred. The company’s last piece Spectrum, was described by The Stage newspaper as ‘bold, inventive dance,’ and received a number of four-star reviews.

From successful runs in New York, Manchester and London, Mixed Movement – an open stage for dancers in any style returns to Stratford for two nights. The brainchild of DawN Crandell and Baba Israel (Live music) the concept is to provide an evening of spontaneous dance performance. Modelled on open mic nights for comedians, dancers from all styles/genres are welcomed and invited to just ’get up and dance’. This ultimate freestyle dance experience is a rare opportunity to watch breath-taking creativity through improvised dance.

Local International
– this successful night returns to present a mixed bill of bold and
inspiring work from three artists from across the globe and around the corner. Each piece draws on world influences and blends Breaking, Contemporary dance, Hip Hop, media and humorous realism. The night features Scottish Bboy Tony Mills with the highly acclaimed WATCH IT! Currently on tour in the UK and making its London premiere, this production has been described as ‘slick, seamless… a perfectly judged production’. This witty exploration of a television addict makes essential viewing not only for lovers of dance but also theatre enthusiasts; French/German duo Sébastien Ramirez and Hyun-Jung Wangare making their London debut with the highly anticipated Amor & Psyché. London audiences have previously been stunned by Ramirez’s work since his London debut in Dance Currents 2009 with the innovative piece Together Alone with Raphael Hillebrand.

Wowing audiences it was immediately programmed at Breakin’ Convention, Sadler’s Wells and has now successfully toured the UK; Finally London locals BirdGang with Birdnet - BirdGang are famously known for uniquely creating their own dance movement by the name Aahehop - a fusion and evolution of all the Hip Hop dance styles to create a fluid, ground breaking art form. The Company have recently performed at the Bafta Awards Ceremonies, T4 On the Beach and Sadlerʼs Wells to name a few.

East London Dance is on the move, reconnecting with the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch to present Protein Dance’s LOL (Lots of love). Artistic Director Luca Silverstrini with his ‘extremely clever and constantly entertaining’ (The Times) choreography delves into a world of electronic communication to uncover the shift that social networking has had on the way we live and love. Expect social comment, provocative humour and engaging performances from this award winning company.

Collabo is back! Now in its 6th year this successful sell out show provides an opportunity to see some of the most highly respected Hip Hop artists being commissioned to collaborate and create this season's new 'must have' style. A stellar line-up of stage and screen dance phenomenon’s is guaranteed with previous years having featured: Boy Blue Entertainment (Pied Piper), Zoonation (Into The Hoods), Plague (World Hip Hop Dance Champions) Impact Dance, TK Spin, Animaineax (Winners of Move Like Michael Jackson & finalists of So You Think You Can Dance), Dance2xs (Featuring: So You Think You Can Dance’s Judge Sisco), Uchenna Dance and VOCAB Dance.

Unified On The Hunt For Dance Groups

We are looking for groups to perform at this years Unified Dance Showcase 2011 on the 12th (Under 18’s) and 13th (Over 18’s) of August held at the Campus West Theatre. This will be the 5th year of Unified and we plan to make it the biggest yet. We are already awaiting a final decision from 3 very well-known companies who are interested in acting as sponsors, plus a possible television appearance for performers in the show.

Why is Unified Different? And what does it mean to us?

"A Show to Unify the Dance Community...."

The idea for Unified was inspired by a London dance event called 'Stylefest', where a discussion forums amongst dancers highlighted the need for the dance community to pull together and support each other rather than promoting the atmosphere of rivalry that seems common place between dance companies and schools. Brendon Hansford from Alter Ego Dance felt that this was an issue that hit very close to home and decided to create a dance showcase with the intention to unify the dance community. Little did we know that a movement was being created fuelled by a collective belief in our motto “Don’t talk about them, Talk to them”. Belief that this simple strategy can avoid the unnecessary conflict caused by hearsay, rumours and gossip, helping companies and schools to communicate and work together.

By putting on this show we were initially hoping to build bridges with other companies and help others to do the same, helping towards developing a strong dance community who support each other.

Since the very first show we feel that this show has helped us build old broken relationships and create some amazing new connections with dance groups and schools. It has done the same for many other groups :)

WHAT WILL YOU GET?

We hope that being part of the show and supporting the movement is a strong motive :) But… to make it a little more appealing to you we will give you and you group a whole web page on www.danceunified.co.uk to upload pretty much anything you want to advertise your company, plus your information will be printed in the program so that the public are able to contact you after the show.

Scottish Dance Theatre celebrate 25th anniversary with new programme of work

2011 is a landmark 25th year for Scotland’s leading contemporary dance company.  We will shortly premiere a new body of work, Letters from America, placing side by side works by choreographers based on the USA’s east and west coasts.  Khaos, by Benjamin Levy (San Francisco) and Lay Me Down Safe by Kate Weare (NYC), brings fresh choreographic signatures from across the pond and dance makers whose work will be show for the first time in the UK.

The tour opens at SDT’s home, Dundee Rep Theatre on 16-19 February and tours the UK until May. For 25 years SDT has been at the fore front of its genre and passionately believes in producing honest and engaging dance that has resonance in people’s lives.

Letters from America is a striking double bill by two of America’s most sought after, emerging choreographers.

Khaos by Benjamin Levy, uses Levy’s individual choreographic voice to explore the distinction between continual, shifting change and transformation. What are the elements that lead to a drastic shift of life course and identity, such that we will never feel the same way again? Designer Garance Marneur’s inflatable set changes and moves, alternately supporting, pushing back, welcoming and suffocating, as dancers navigate the volatile atmosphere in Levy's active/reactive choreographic style.

Lay Me Down Safe by Kate Weare, draws on the individuality of each dancer to take you on a tender foray into our human inexperience at reckoning with desire and loss.  Offering up a sensuous movement and fierce physicality, Lay Me Down Safe explores whether desire - the experience we follow like a moth to flame - ultimately keeps us safe from harm, or places us right in harms way.  The work features designs by Katherina Radeva and is lit by Jon Clark, recipient of an Outstanding achievement Olivier Award in 2009.

SDT’s education programme continues with a series of SDT Interactive performances in Jersey, Stirling, Edinburgh, Perth and Mull.  SDT Interactive performances are lecture demonstrations with excerpts and short works from the companies’ current repertoire.  They provide an accessible and vibrant introduction to the company and to contemporary dance.

SDT is celebrating its 25th birthday with a series of events including an exhibition of SDT’s images from throughout the years at its home, Dundee Rep Theatre.  The public will be welcomed into the studio to watch the dancers rehearse in a series of Open Studios and SDT will take part in Reel Lifes at The Place, London, a session which where SDT’s Artistic Director Janet Smith and some of SDT’s dancers will share some of their favourite on screen dances.

More Anniversary events will be announced later in the year.
