Currently performing in the West End production FELA!, top class dancer and choreographer Papson Sylla is an endless source of creativity and energy. His style is a mix of traditional African dance with modern elements.

Famous African artists ask him regularly to create choreographies for their video clips and shows: Tiken Jah Fakoly, Oumou Sangaré, Césaria Evora, Khaled, Shaft, Norma Claire, Aïcha Koni, Tissénifo, Savane Allah, Samba Oussou, Amadou e Mariam and Rokia Troare.

As a child, he was called the father of the sound as he was always running and looking for the sounds of the Djembedrum. Papson participated on his first dance contest at the age of 5 years. Later his parents didn’t want him to become a dancer, so he left his family to follow his dream.  His journey took him through several African countries and national ballets to Paris. Before he settled down in Paris he became the choreographer of the Ivory Dance company and latter the assistant choreographer of George Momboye (AfriKa Afrika).

Since 2003 he works as a freelance choreographer and dancer. In 2009 he created his first Afro contemporary Dance Theatre “ Mon Histoire “.

Travel Through Time with Rosie Kay -The Severn Valley Railway Great Train Dance

Stepping into the Severn Valley world of trains and journeys into the past, Rosie Kay Dance Company is getting into gear to lead the region in a dance to another time.

On 23 July 2011, The Great Train Dance performers; dancers and students from throughout the region, will transform the Severn Valley Railway into a magical experience with a puzzle to solve. In a Hitchcock style thriller designed for families, this fascinating performance will soon draw all ages on the train into the world of the absurd and seduce everyone into hunting for clues.

Local heritage mixing with the allure of steam will create a surreal backdrop for this mystery. As the landscape comes alive with dancers, the puzzle of The Great Train Dance will unfold. Equipped with a map and a keen eye for unexpected goings on, record your findings until all is revealed in the finale at Highley Engine House.

The Great Train Dance is a Dancing for the Games project, funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a cultural and sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games across the UK. The project is inspired by London 2012 and part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands.  The initiative will involve upwards of 500 participants in a variety of roles and over the next few months, 16 appointed dance leaders will be encouraging local people to join in both as dancers and in the fun activities surrounding and supporting the project.

Groups will be formed from February 2011 and the happening itself will be created throughout May, June and July until the performance on 23rd July during the Severn Valley Railway's 'In Bloom' season.

"Steam trains have always been a big part of my family life so it's very exciting for me to be creating a unique dance around the Severn Valley Railway.  It is an ambitious but easily accessible project which everyone can get involved in in some way.  The work is part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad and it's going to be fun as well as an opportunity to do something completely different.  It's got national as well as regional appeal, from train enthusiasts to people who have maybe never visited the railway or seen a steam train up close before." Rosie Kay

If you are aged between 11 - 25 years and want to take part in the event, contact the Rosie Kay Dance Company on info@rosiekay.co.uk. If you are in the Severn Valley Region and want to get involved you could even set up your own satellite event or take part as a volunteer. Don't forget to tell us what you are planning.

Performance tickets go on sale in early 2011.

Hofesh Shechter Dancers To Showcase Own Choreography

Political Mother – The Choreographer’s Cut
Sadler’s Wells 12 to 16 July

And a first chance to see choreography by company dancers.

2010 saw Hofesh Shechter present his first full-length work Political Mother at Sadler’s Wells. It received a rapturous collective response and a nomination for a South Bank Sky Arts Award 2011. Now Shechter brings Political Mother – The Choreographer’s Cut, revamped for over 30 performers, to Sadler’s Wells for five nights from 12 to 16 July.

Shechter reworked his signature double bill Uprising/In your rooms into an unforgettable dance gig at the Roundhouse in 2009. For Sadler’s Wells, Political Mother gets the same treatment. Bringing the atmosphere of a rock concert and brimming with the edgy emotional complexity that characterises Shechter’s work, Political Mother - The Choreographer's Cut will be performed with a live band of over 20 musicians alongside at least twelve dancers from the Hofesh Shechter Company.

Shechter’s dancers are internationally recognised as performers of incredible strength and style. In June 2011, they have an opportunity to reveal their own choreographic voices in a programme of new work which will tour the UK. Dancers from the UK, USA, Taiwan, France and Germany, all of whom are currently touring Shechter’s work worldwide, will showcase their own choreography in an evening of dance featuring live music, text and video.
