SCORING POINTS FOR STYLE AT THE CONSERVATIVE CONFERENCE

Birmingham based Rosie Kay Dance Company has secured one of their highest profile performances yet.

On Tuesday 5 October, choreographer Rosie Kay and Chris Linda, will dance at the Conservative Party conference, Birmingham at Symphony Hall.

They are performing the duet, Double Points: K, where the two dancers are in a stark universe, spiralling with split second timing around each other.  The physical effort of the performers is exhilarating with the dancers never allowing their attention to drop for a second. The two dancers appear to share one mind and two bodies, perhaps a contemporary image from which comparisons will no doubt be drawn.

Internationally acclaimed, DanceXchange Associate Artist Rosie Kay has been making original dance in the region for more than 7 years.  Known for her recent high profile work, 5 SOLDIERS, Kay’s work has the reputation of being a tour de force of the senses.

This year Kay will be building on the success of 5 SOLDIERS with an international tour being the focus.  As part of the Cultural Olympiad she is creating a large scale work on the Severn Valley Railway which will perform in July next year.

Vincenzo Lamagna - Behind The String

Hofesh Shechter's work is as much about the music as it is about the dance. The live music accompanying his dance performances adds to the fulfillment of going to watch a Shechter piece. As with all live compositions of this calibre the atmosphere and quality is enhanced by the intensity and precision of both the musicians and the dancers.

We caught up with band member Vincenzo Lamagna to give us a little peep into the shadows (the guys rocking on the 3meter high platform in the background of a Shechter show) and to find out how an electric guitarist ends up getting involved with contemporary dance.

Vincenzo was born and raised in Napoli, Italy and moved to London aged 25. Like Hofesh, Vincenzo highlights his impulsive nature for music:
"Although my approach to music is completely instinctive and self trained, at some point in my life I had the huge fortune to study with some of the finest Italians and European musicians".
Vincenzo started professionally at a young age, got involved in many projects covering all music styles and worked as a session musician, solo artist, composer and producer. Once he moved to London he had to start all over again.
"You know how it works... you meet someone, and from then someone else...well... that's what happened!!!"
After being introduced to 'The Place' by musician Daniel Biro, Vincenzo became a musician accompanist for dance classes at both The Place and Laban.
"I have to be honest... I've never been so much into Dance before, and I would never have thought about myself in a job like this, but..... I LOVE IT!!!..  I've improved so much since I started, and I'm feeling a much much better musician because of the energy and the inspiration coming from the dance".

Vincenzo was introduced to the Hofesh Shechter Company by work colleague James Keane at Laban, auditioned as a guitarist for Political Mother and got the job.
"Hofesh composed the score for the music by himself with the collaboration of a few other musicians, one of them is Yaron Engler our lead musician for the live. Then we all worked together for a month on the production of the piece giving our musical inputs and ideas, regarding the arrangements of the guitars... since the tour started my role is being on the 3meters high platform rocking out my electric guitar as loud as possible".
Vincenzo Lamagna is still on tour with the Hofesh Shechter Company and working on his own album due to be released at the end of the year. Find out more about Vincenzo at his website www.behindthestring.com

Award Winning Choreographer Liv Lorent returns to Dundee Rep

Award Winning Choreographer returns to Dundee Rep
BalletLORENT - Blood, Sweat & Tears
Wednesday 6 October, 8pm
Dundee Rep Theatre

In 2004 and 2007 Scottish Dance Theatre, based at Dundee Rep, commissioned acclaimed choreographer Liv Lorent to create the award winning LUXURIA and the stunning tenderhook respectively.  Liv’s own company balletLORENT, one of the UK’s most exciting contemporary dance companies, brings a new production, Blood, Sweat & Tears, to Dundee Rep this Autumn.
Dancer: Philippa White Photo by Ravi Deepres
Blood, Sweat & Tears is a powerful piece about the ups and downs of unconditional love centered around the huge impact the arrival of a baby has on a relationship.  Made up in three parts with seven dancers, including ex Scottish Dance Theatre dancers Baptiste Bourgougnon and Philippa White, it follows a young couple and the extraordinary transformations they undergo as they learn to cope with becoming a family. Using wrestling as part of its choreographic language, the dancers fly and fall at each other’s bodies as they struggle for equilibrium.
The opening duet of Blood, Sweat and Tears was performed to critical acclaim at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.  This is your first chance to see balletLORENT’s new work in full, in Scotland.
Wed 6 Oct, 8pm, Dundee Rep Theatre
Tickets are £5-£14 and can be booked though Dundee Rep Box Office on

Akram Khan Company and Curve - Vertical Road

It was Akram's intention to return to pure dance for this performance, with greater importance placed on lighting and costume rather than text and dialogue as with past works.

The staging was brilliant, the sound quality excellent, the costuming and lighting visually nice. Apart from a couple of stunning solo pieces that echoed Akram's traditional choreographic style, the dance itself felt disappointingly mediocre. This left the philosophy behind the production feeling all rather self indulgent on Akram's behalf.

Vertical Road is a collaboration between Curve and the Akram Khan Company. This work was created during a month long residency so the creation process may have been limited.

"La Porte" and 'Eteins Pas' with Miguel Marin and Marso Riviere

World Premiere of work-in Progress "La Porte" and Spanish Premiere of 'Eteins Pas', 2nd and 3rd of October 2010 at Tantarantana Barcelona With Miguel Marin and Marso Riviere.

Eteins Pas:

A fragment of an idea that has evolved into a work in progress Solo piece, Developed during Choreodrome 2009 at the Place. The piece was inspired by the idea of life after death, with many ideas coming from reading stories about out of body experiences.
The piece is partly improvised.
"This source material was a great stimulus to challenge my existing movement vocabulary and ways of thinking while performing."

"La Porte" Working Title:

Inspired from a very well known theme of "Death deciding on our very last breath" Composer Miguel Marin and Dancer/choreographer Marso Riviere interpreting metaphoric death and life characters . MIguel (Death) is like a remote control on life. Choosing "when we stay or go"…. Marso an ordinary person in his last moment of life is trying to dodge this moment of fate. Distorted sound manipulations and original contemporary hip hop dance movement it is a battle of life and death, with humour and darkness, an abstract vision and new interpretation of something we all know more than well.

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company On Tour - Faultline and Bruise Blood

Two works from one of the UK’s most inventive choreographic imaginations

Faultline photo by Chris Nash

Autumn tour opens at The Castle, Wellingborough on 13 October

Shobana Jeyasingh’s site-specific work Counterpoint, created for the fountains of Somerset House, was a huge summer success. Autumn 2010 sees Jeyasingh’s acclaimed company touring two of the choreographer’s finest recent works.

Bruise Blood

dancer: Deveraj Thimmaiah, photo by Nuno Santos

2007’s Faultline contains some of Jeyasingh’s most notable choreography to date, performed with sharpness and speed by the company’s dancers. Inspired by Gautam Malkani’s novel ‘Londonstani’, Faultline paints a gripping picture of the turbulent tensions among 21st century British-Asian youth. Scanner’s electronic sound score is interwoven with music by Errollyn Wallen movingly sung by the classical Indian soprano, Patricia Rozario. Pete Gomes’ flickering monochrome film shot in Southall and Brick Lane adds to the intensity of the atmosphere.

The exhilarating Bruise Blood (musically recalibrated from the 2009 original) is set to a remix of Steve Reich’s politically potent Come Out by composer Glyn Perrin. The piece opens with a powerful solo performance by charismatic beatboxer Shlomo before the eight dancers take over the stage with Jeyasingh’s intense, thrilling choreograph.
