ENTANGLED Dance Festival

St Paul's Church, Covent Garden, London... a stunning location to unveil what's new in contemporary dance.

Dance festival 'Entangled' showcased work by Tempered Body Dance Company, Collisions Dance Company, Big Beef Dance Theatre, Joss Arnott Dance and Antique Dances.

Threshold by Joss Arnott Dance stood out by a country mile as the most well established piece of the evening.

Threshold is described by the company as 'a focus on whole body articulation' and 'radical dynamic physicality'.

Flaring up an atmosphere the moment the dancers entered the performance space, you could sense the audience shift from passiveness to alertness. This anticipation was met by a performance which was not only technically balanced, but invigorating to observe and can only assume to perform also.

Arnott's choreography is a refreshing blend of traditional and progressive styles. Some specific moments reminded us of Shechter's signature moves, but this is by no means a criticism, as we found them particularly well placed by Arnott.

This company is well worth remembering and we're excited about what's to come from Joss Arnott...

Dance's Classes, Courses & One-Off Workshops for Autumn 2010 Yorkshire

Yorkshire Dance launches exciting, newly enhanced programme of classes and courses in September 2010.

Yorkshire Dance, based in central Leeds’ developing cultural hub on Quarry Hill, and which celebrates its 30th birthday in 2012, is inviting you to take part in a brand new programme of classes and courses, starting this September.

Every week during term-time, Yorkshire Dance already welcomes around 700 people to classes which include everything from Bollywood to breakdance, from ballroom to ballet. And it’s anticipating a lot more when the autumn term gets underway.

So what’s new? Well, quite a lot, it seems, among the staggering 64 weekly classes and courses.

Wieke Eringa, Director of Yorkshire Dance, says, “We’re introducing some great new tutors and dance styles to the programme – we’re opening on Sundays for the first time, with a special Health and Fitness programme for adults, and there are new classes such as Zumba Fitness, Body Confidence and Modern Jive during the week.”

“On Saturdays, we’ve developed our programme for children up to the age of 12, who are now going to be our Saturday Superstars. They can do streetdance, ballet or breakdance – and we’re really delighted to be offering the newest Latin American fitness craze for kids, Zumbatomic.”

Another new feature of the programme is a seriously funky new class for young people aged 13-15. Fuzed offers a mixture of urban styles on Wednesdays, from 5.30pm – 6.30pm. More than just a dance class, it’s an opportunity to socialise, trade skills and maybe create a brand new urban dance crew in the city.

Wieke adds, “Dance is the second most popular physical activity for young people after football and the top activity for girls outside school*, and Yorkshire Dance is the perfect place for people of every age, and of any level of experience, to dance in a safe, supportive and professional environment.”

Yorkshire Dance continues to offer many classes that focus on the stylistic, technical and cultural background of various dance forms – tango, contemporary dance, ballet, streetdance and many more.

Also on offer are classes in Arabic bellydancing, tap and jazz dance for the over-50s, as well as the The Dance 50+, which offers a taste of all kinds of styles. Also back this autumn is the ever-popular Mind the Step class for adults with learning difficulties.

The new term begins on Monday 13 September, and the full timetable of classes and courses is online at www.yorkshiredance.com, where you can now book your tickets online for the first time.

You can also phone to ask for a brochure to be posted to you, on 0113 243 8765.

ONE-OFF WORKSHOPS

The autumn term also features 13 one-off workshops. Highlights include your chance to work with the professional dancers and choreographer of the acclaimed Fleur Darkin Company for two days in October, culminating with a live performance. DISGO will be staged at The Carriageworks, Leeds, on Friday 8 October as part of Light Night Leeds.

Award-winning Protein Dance is also inviting you to contribute to the creation of its new touring show, L.O.L (lots of love). Spend an afternoon working with renowned choreographer Luca Silvestrini, sharing your own experience of the online world, and you may find your own material turning up in the performance when it reaches the West Yorkshire Playhouse next February.

You could also try out an Aerial skills workshop with Urban Angels Circus, or live your dream to move like Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in Dancing the Movies.

And in December, if you’re worn out with all the shopping and preparations for Christmas, why not Relax for Christmas with a soothing workshop featuring a blend of Pilates, yoga, stretching and massage techniques?

With so much going on at Yorkshire Dance this autumn, you might just need it...

Check www.yorkshiredance.com for details or call 0113 243 8765 for a brochure.
