Choreographers Discuss Their Practice - Spectacular Simplicity

Nacera Belaza, Jonathan Burrows, Charles Linehan and Ros Warby in conversation with Rosemary Butcher, Ramsay Burt, Eckhard Thiemann and others.

This year’s Dance Umbrella festival features a number of artists who present a radically pared down vision of choreography. Despite spanning different generations and cultural backgrounds, they share similar concerns: an absence of narrative, scepticism of formal technique and a resistance to, or redefining of, the theatrical.

Discussing minimalism as a choreographic approach rather than style, Spectacular Simplicity explores the reasons and methods which these choreographers use to bring out the essential. The innovations of Trisha Brown and her Judson Dance Theater colleagues (including Yvonne Rainer, Steve Paxton, Deborah Hay and David Gordon), form a starting point for the speakers to investigate the role of reduction and elimination in choreographic practice today.

A Brief Encounter with... Ben Duke, Will Duke, Dario Palermo, Zoë Svendsen (UK)

DISCOMBOBULATOR

Discombobulator is a fantastical solo set against evolving projections of a neglected Venetian façade. The remarkable liquid agility of Ben Duke’s performance triggers, in real-time, the live electronic composition and computer-generated imagery. This media interplay explores the ultimately insurmountable separation between the physical presence of the body and the imaginative possibilities of virtual reality.

Discombobulator is a collaboration between Ben Duke, Will Duke, Dario Palermo and Zoë Svendsen.

The piece was developed during a 12 day interdisciplinary residency at Venice Biennale’s International Festival of Contemporary Music (2009).

Discombobulator is part of Dance Umbrella's Brief Encounters series, in which short works by talented new choreographers or established artists are performed prior to main stage shows.

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan in Lin Hwai-min’s new work

Water Stains on the Wall
Water Stains on the Wall  Dancer: TSAI Ming-yuan
Performed by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan  Photo by LIU Chen-hsiang

World Premiere
November 19-28, 2010
The National Theater, Taipei, Taiwan

The virtuosity of Cloud Gate dancers has made the critics ask “when has one ever seen a company with such magical and beautiful body?” (Neues Deutschland) and rave that they “possess a control and articulation that verge on the superhuman. These are performers who can make stillness every bit as eloquent as animation. In fact, they have the power to change your metabolism” (Chicago Sun Times). In his new work Water Stains on the Wall, Lin Hwai-min challenges them with the task of dancing on a rigged, tilted stage.

Covered with white Marley, the set looks like a piece of rice paper, onto which images of drifting clouds in different degrees of blackness are projected. They look like flowing ink, creating exquisite spaces that are constantly shifting. The total effect reminds one of Chinese classical landscape painting.

To the music that consists of traditional Chinese instruments against a soundscape of water dripping, the light gray silk robes worn by the dancers are constantly “dyed” black by the projected clouds and reappear in shinning white light. Deeply grounded on the tilted floor, yet appear to be floating all the time: whirling and leaping high on the top of the white space, they give the illusion of the summer clouds and the water stains on the wall.

The title of the dance came from a conversation between two of the most respected calligraphers in China:
“Where do you get the inspiration for your calligraphy?” asked Yen Chen-ching, the great master of brush writing in Tang Dynasty (618 - 907).
“I observe summer clouds that resemble mountains with spectacular peaks,” replied the young Huai Su, who later became the most renowned calligrapher of the wild cursive style.
“How about water stains on the wall?” asked Yen Chen-ching.
“Right on!” exclaimed Huai Su.
In reality, water stains on the wall are the result of a long process of natural evolution, organic and unpretentious. The legend of the conversation established “water stains on the wall” as a popular metaphor that represents the highest state in the aesthetics of Chinese calligraphy. Lin Hwai-min and dancers take off from this metaphor and create an abstract work of beauty and magic that stands sublimely on its own.

CLOUD GATE DANCE THEATRE OF TAIWAN
Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan was founded in 1973 as the first contemporary dance company in any Chinese speaking community. Directed by internationally renowned choreographer Lin Hwai-Min, Cloud Gate transforms ancient aesthetics into thrilling modern celebrations of motion. The 24 dancers of the company receive trainings from the West and the East, including chi kung, meditation, internal martial arts, modern dance, ballet, and calligraphy.

With frequent appearances in the international arts festivals, including the Next Wave Festival, Cloud Gate has received high acclaims throughout the world. Among them, Cursive: A Trilogy was elected as the “best dance choreography” of 2006 by Ballet-Tanz and Theaterheute, Germany, while Moon Water topped the list of best dance events of 2003 chosen by the New York Times.

LIN HWAI-MIN
Founder and Artistic Director

Founder and Artistic Director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, Lin Hwai-Min is heralded as “the most important choreographer in Asia” (Berliner Morgenpost) and “unchallenged giant in Asia . . . one of the greats of the twentieth century” (South China Morning Post, Hong Kong). He draws his inspiration from Asian cultures and aesthetics to create works with contemporary resonance which has prompted the Dance Europe to acclaim: “No company in the world dances like Cloud Gate. It presents a distinct and mature Chinese choreographic language. The importance of this evolution in Asian dance is no less profound than the impact of Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt on European classical ballet.”

Lin is also a recipient of many awards and honors, including Honorary Doctorates from Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University, National Chiao Tung University, National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan, and Hong Kong Baptist University; Ramon Magsaysay Award, the so called “Nobel Prize of Asia;” the John D. Rockefeller 3rd Award; the “Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters” from the French Ministry of Culture; and Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Movimentos Dance Prize. In 2005, he was honored by the Time Magazine as one of the “Asia’s Heroes.”

C12 Dance Theatre presents 'The Chair'

Arcola Theatre July 28th- Aug 7th 8:15pm

C-12 Dance Theatre presents The Chair. This emotionally charged double-bill of dance-inspired physical theatre has been captivating audiences since the premieres in Sweden and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The first piece, Enough, is a female duet about the struggle of living with a burden. The title piece, The Chair, fuses theatrical narrative with fluid dance and movement to tell the story of a man who is forced to face his past.

Murder, torture and forgiveness are explored through one man’s discovery of his past. What is the truth behind this individual’s situation? What will his retribution be? Through this explosive piece of contemporary dance theatre C-12 Dance Theatre will take audiences on a journey into one man’s experience of justice.

C-12 Dance Theatre is an emerging London/Hertfordshire based dance theatre company which is rapidly gaining status on the dance circuit. Established in 2005 by Annie-Lunnette Deakin-Foster, Nasae Evanson and Adam Towndrow, the company fuse dance and theatre creating a unique blend of physical dance performance with a theatrical narrative.

Carlos Acosta Premieres

Premieres combines ballet and modern dance.

Carlos Acosta is known for his criticisms of ballet and has been talking of a possible move away from ballet for quite some time.

"Ballet is a formula and it's unorganic. It is antihuman," he says. "A square here" — he puts his arms out in front of him — "a box there" — he raises his arms above his head. "Humans were not meant to move that way, let alone while jumping high in the air."

"I'm not a ballet dancer," he says. "It's never been natural for me, and I've often thought of quitting. But something has always driven me on."

"When you put on the white tights, and you see some other 20-year-old kid leaping about, you ask yourself, 'Why would I carry on? I've done it so well, for so long.' When is it time to say, 'Enough'?" he asks. "I'm battling with myself all the time."

For 2010, Carlos will perform his most ambitious new show to date.

- Royal Ballet Principal Zenaida Yanowsky dancing with Carlos in a new work by Edwaard Liang (NDT, New York City Ballet and many others)

Dance Video: Scottish Dance Theatre Promo 2010

Scottish Dance Theatre's 2010 promotional film including interviews with SDT's dancers, Artistic Director Janet Smith, Dance Agent for Change Caroline Bowditch and choreographer Hofesh Shechter.

IntoThe Hoods Returns With Street Dance Stars Akai & Sacha Chang

Into the Hoods received universal praise at two Edinburgh Fringes (2006/07) and during its West End run (2008). Both the show and those involved continue to be at the forefront of the street dance phenomenon with Artistic Director and choreographer Kate Prince and cast members Akai and Sacha Chang starring in the first British made 3D film, Street Dance 3D this summer.

Following sell-out shows and rave reviews last Christmas at Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, the show has exploded in popularity, gaining cult-status among a whole generation of street dance enthusiasts. Fans will be given another chance to see the show this summer at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, where it has been up-scaled to appear on its largest stage yet.

Featuring music from Stevie Wonder, Dizzee Rascal, Massive Attack, The Chemical Brothers, Kanye West and Prince, Into the Hoods tells the story of two runaway kids and their adventures in the ominous Ruff Endz estate. With characters like singer Lil Red, two-timing rapper Prince, Rap- en-Zel and gold trainer-wearing Spinderella, Into the Hoods resonates with contemporary cultural references and bridges the gap between street and stage.

Mélanie Thierry Stars In New Work by Akram Khan For Yves Saint Laurent Belle D'Opium‏

Mélanie Thierry, the muse for Yves Saint Laurent’s new feminine fragrance Belle d’Opium, is the star of a new work by international dancer and choreographer, Akram Khan for the advertising film. The new advert will start to air in the UK from the weekend of 25 September 2010.

Inspired by the creative vision of Stefano Pilati, Artistic Director of Yves Saint Laurent, Belle d'Opium is the fragrance of a modern Salomé, a woman full of ambivalence; fragile and dangerous, with an irresistible beauty and grace.

New Advert for Belle d'Opium Yves Saint Laurent with Mélanie Thierry

The dance is a sensual creation to bring alive today the mythic and fatal dance of Salomé. It features the woman as the source of addiction, showing what the viewer rarely sees: the texture of the skin, the breath, the tension.  The film is directed by Romain Gavras. His incisive camera transcends the troubling femininity of the actress, oscillating constantly between childlike fragility and immense determination, control and abandon. Music for the new work is composed by Nitin Sawhney. Photography by Mert & Marcus.

Akram Khan is one of most acclaimed choreographers of his generation working in Britain today. His work and creative collaborations with the world’s leading brands and performers journey across boundaries to create uncompromising artistic narratives for the international stage. Work is rooted in Akram Khan’s classical Kathak and modern dance training, evolving to communicate ideas that are intelligent, courageous and new. Previous collaborators include international tours with Oscar winning actress, Juliette Binoche, Anish Kapoor, Sylvie Guillem, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Hanif Kureishi and Kylie Minogue.

The international launch of the perfume took place in New York City on 17 June. The party was attended by 140 international journalists and 300 celebrities, among them Alexa Chung, Ashley Olsen, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Olivier Martinez, and Whitney Port.

Renaud de Lesquen, Président of YSL Beauté said: “Akram is a classicist and a modernist, with an international reputation for powerful and profoundly moving work.  His original creation for Belle d’Opium is remarkable as he successfully captured and expressed in his own language the emotion we wished to express with this fragrance: a woman who becomes an obsession: moving, incandescent, vertiginous, intoxicating.”

Mélanie Thierry said:  “For Belle d’Opium, I tried to express a power that was docile and feline at once, a total release, close to enchantment. Something extreme. In doing it I really felt that I was part of a project that is out of the ordinary.”

Akram Khan said: “This project is inspired by the concept of taking away excessive movement, about focusing on the breath and the movement of the breath, the most simple things, the most profound things, the movement of the wrist, the movement of the eyes, the movement of the neck. It’s about peeling away the superficial things and going down to the essence.”

Farooq Chaudhry, producer, Akram Khan Company, said:  “Akram Khan Company believes in the power of collaboration, out of these partnerships comes new and exciting work and we’re proud to have been able to work with an iconic brand such as Yves Saint Laurent.”

Akram Khan’s long term collaboration with Nitin Sawhney continues with Vertical Road, a new ensemble work from Akram Khan Company and choreographed by Akram that premiers on 16 September 2010 at the Curve, Leicester and opens at Sadler’s Wells on 5 October.

Akram and Nitin’s current production Confluence, featuring both artists, has returned to Sadler’s Wells from 20 - 24 July 2010 due to popular demand.

Neon Productions Fundraising Dance Performance at Swindon Dance

Neon Productions invites you to a fundraising dance performance at
Swindon Dance, Town Hall Studios, SN1 1QF

Tuesday 3rd August, 7.30pm
Ticket: £10 / £5 (Cons)

Help Adrienne Hart and her company of talented dancers take the mixed media dance production Falling From Trees to Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Watch the work then enjoy drinks in the foyer to a DJ set by London’s Rival Consoles.

Falling From Trees, choreographed by Adrienne Hart is set in a psychiatric hospital and delves into the mind of a resident patient.

The piece explores how a neurological disease can alter your sense of self and relationship to the world and people around you. Inspired by the work of neurologist Oliver Sacks, Adrienne has created her own dance narrative based on her research of several neurological disorders. Sacks’ popular book titled ‘The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat’, and one particular short story of a man with visual agnosia served as a catalyst for the development of Adrienne’s Falling From Trees.

‘Highly articulate… an ambitious piece and powerful in its content’
Josephine Leask (Guardian)

Falling From Trees features video projection by filmmaker Alice Powell (National Film and Television School)
and original music composed by the critically acclaimed composer Peter Broderick.

‘A songwriter of beguiling depth' The Sunday Times
‘Adrienne told me from the beginning she was looking for a score of piano and strings. So I decided to take this literally and make a rule not to use any other instruments. In the script it called for a ticking clock. I made this sound by tapping on the body of the violin with my fingernails. The sound of an electric shock given to the patient is depicted by a quick, distorted piano chord.’

Falling From Trees is performed by Jennifer Essex, Adrienne Hart, David Lloyd and Fabíola Santana.

Concise and eerie, this is a poignant work’Lauren Strain (Muso Magazine)
