Cloud Dance Festival’s first  festival of 2010 will be featuring our very special guest Mavin Khoo, guests from the recent TV dance competitions So You Think You Can Dance and Got To Dance, past audience favourites, and a fresh new selection of the best in new and emerging contemporary dance…. with some additional guests yet to be confirmed!

We are delighted to welcome back recent festival successes Slanjayvah Danza, Taciturn, Hyanglae Jin and Sol Dans; Scarlett Perdereau will be returning with the final version of a piece originally created for Cloud Dance Festival in September ’08, and Welsh repertory company Ffin Dance will be making a rare London appearance. Other returning performers include sisters Aya and Hana Saotome, and Cascade Dance, with a brand new piece created
specifically for this festival.

The pieces selected for this festival include an exploration of Grimms’ fairy tales, the Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota, happiness, social interaction and ‘20s Mexico.

The international flavour of this festival reflects the artistic diversity within the London dance industry, and the creativity produced by multinational collaborations: we will be presenting London-based choreographers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Finland, Canada, France, USA and Madeira, with companies travelling from Leeds, Liverpool, South Wales and Tunbridge Wells to participate.

Cloud Dance Festival aims to present a selection of high-quality contemporary dance three times a year, with its lineups consisting of a mixture of special guests, returning festival favourites, and new applicants – offering the audience a variety of pieces which promise to be provocative, humorous, contemplative and insightful. Above all, Trouble & Desire offers the audience innovative and fresh pieces of contemporary dance from around the world that reinforces London’s love affair with this genre.

With at least 19 companies performing across three evenings, Cloud Dance Festival is not just any dance festival…!

2Faced Dance Company: Still Breathing - Sloppy with An Air of Vanity

Always eager to see what a company that fuses breaking styles into their dance performances have in store. This is what 2Faced Dance Company do, so we were pretty keen to see what they had to show.

Really saddened to say that this was a poor performance.

The music was great, however the choreography wasn't there to fully appreciate it. It was unimaginative. Starting a routine with the basic top rock and not taking it anywhere is a major put off. This happened early on in the performance and immediately worried us for what was to come.

The dancers were consistently sloppy and out of sync. Not compensated by the over dramatised face expressions and attitudes.
What we want to see from fusion is the blending of styles to create something new. The dance forms in this performance stood out as separate as opposed to fused, neither of which were delivered to a very good standard.

Dancers Nathan French, Robby Graham and Taylor Benjamin are exceptions to these criticisms. If all the dancers were groomed to their standard, and led by a more forward thinking choreographer ... there could be some hope.

Would only purchase a ticket for any future performances out of curiosity of improvement. There seems to be an air of vanity outweighing the full potential of this all male dance group. Currently we're afraid that the only fans cheering after a 2Faced show are those impressed by lads with abs for which breaking moves are still a novelty.  But if this is what the lads are working for, then good for them!
