Balbir Singh Dance Company - Enchanting Performance

In 2007 Balbir Singh gained funding to see how Kathak would develop contemporary dancers over nine months. This project and related events has been received well.

Initially contemporary trained Singh went on to learn Kathak under Akram Khan and then Pratap Pawar.

Current works 'Trespass' and 'Play of Percentages' danced alongside original live music is a blend of Kathak and contemporary dance.

His choreography and live music is enchanting and it's interesting to see the dancers relating to each other as well as interacting with the band during the performance.

Singh says that he doesn't like to get bored whilst watching shows himself. He comments on the importance of an audience maintaining their interest the whole way through a performance.

The majority of the time watching was without distraction. It was as if Balbir knew which parts were potentially tiresome, and knew when and how to bring you back to focus on the stage.

The dancers were of various technical ability but overall the performance was class.

Bare Bones Dance Company: BareBones 6 - Slightly Outdated

The exciting thing about this production was the fact that it was presented in the round. You could see the audience as well as the dancers. This had slight novelty value, and backed up the title 'BareBones'.  With spectators watching from all angles and no backstage the dancers were exposed more so than normal.

BareBones6 presented by DX Productions put on 4 separate performances.'Container' choreographed by Rui Horta and the dancers of Bare Bones Dance Company. 'Straight Talking' choreographed by Charlotte Vincent of Vincent Dance Theatre, devised and performed by Robert Clark (Bare Bones Dance Company). 'Magnification' choreographed by Garry Stewart, and 'Hinterland' choreographed by David Massingham in collaboration with the dancers.

All performances were danced at a high standard. Most memorable were' Magnification' and 'Straight Talking' and dancer Celine Alwyn. During 'Magnification' her timing was tight moving to the loud sounds of her cracking bones. This choreography was somewhat dated however. It eventually felt a bit like watching an 80s mime performance. It would have been less uncool with more of a contemporary swing.

Straight Talking was quite hard hitting, but rather melodramatic.  A passionate performance by dancer Robert Clark none the less.
